Elizabeth Bennet has four sisters, no fortune, and a sharper tongue than anyone at the Meryton assembly expects. Mr Darcy has ten thousand a year and the social grace of a locked door. Austen turns a marriage plot into a comedy of judgement, in which the real obstacle is never circumstance but the confident opinions the characters form about one another.
