Written by an eighteen-year-old on a rained-in summer by Lake Geneva, Frankenstein invents science fiction and then immediately complicates it. Victor Frankenstein's creature is articulate, wounded and terrifyingly reasonable, and the horror of the book is less the making than the abandonment.
